The business environment of the Asia-Pacific region is changing quickly due to the growth of China as both a regional and international economic power, The ability to communicate in Mandarin Chinese will be vital to Australian businesses in the medium term and those who possess Mandarin skills will be highly employable members of the Australian workforce.

Young children are highly adept at learning second languages. The ideal age to start the process of learning a second language is between 3 and 8 years old; a child learning a second language at this age can achieve native-speaker proficiency if the educational process is continued.

The Mandarin language is quite different to English, but this does not mean it is difficult to learn, particularly for younger children. Mandarin is a tonal language, which means that the pitch at which a syllable is pronounced alters its meaning. If that seems a little strange, the easiest part of learning Mandarin is that verbs do not change according to the pronoun or tense as they do in most European languages. No need for those verb tables!

“ 尔“ ”你“ ”您“

Tips: “ 尔“ ”你“ ”您“ means “ you”

Mini: Min，How can I use all these words properly?

Min: Well, you use these three words in slightly different situations. You use “ 尔“ er3, when the other person’s social position is lower than yours. You use ”你“ ni3, when the social positions are equal. A boy or girl can call their classmate “ 你“。“您“ nin2, Mini, can you recognize the bottom part of this word?

Mini: Yes, I do. That part means the heart “心 xin1”. This “you” (您nin2) might be used with people who I should show respect. Eg: If I meet Min in the morning, I should say: 您早！老师。 If I meet my classmate Robert, I should say: 你早！同学。
